OUR THANKSGIVING HISTORY

Thanksgiving decoration

A special day tucked between two monster holidays of Halloween and Christmas, Thanksgiving gets far less recognition than it deserves. Celebrated for the first time between the Pilgrims and the Indians in 1621, the three-day long feast was a time of prayer and thanking God for blessings, new friends and a good crop harvest. Today it’s a time for friends and family to kick back, relax, watch football or a movie and enjoy a huge feast! Did you know that potatoes weren’t part of the first Thanksgiving? That’s right, no mashed potatoes! The Irish immigrants hadn’t brought them to the New World yet. After that first Thanksgiving, it was celebrated sporadically and nearly forgotten until the early 1800s. In 1941 it was finally set as a national holiday for our country to celebrate as a reminder of how far we’ve come!

BLACK FRIDAY SHOPPING TRENDS

Woman Kissing Man With Stacked Christmas PresentsWill this year start a new trend? Popular stores like GameStop, Lowe’s, TJX, Staples and now REI have taken a stand against opening their doors on Thanksgiving Day, instead encouraging their shoppers to spend the day outdoors. Although Target, Walmart, Macys and the like will still be open to the public, only 41% of shoppers actually plan to shop on Thanksgiving Day – with the majority doing their shopping online. Despite the outcry of missing time with their families, shoppers STILL showed up! Last year over 22 million people walked through the doors of Wal-Mart on Thanksgiving, and increase of 23.7 percent from the previous year….and this year is sure to do the same! So, get your coffee mug ready, get set to find some great deals… and GO get your shopping on!
